Lesson 8: Energy Transformation
Energy changes form and moves between objects without being created or destroyed. A flashlight provides an example of chemical energy becoming electrical energy, light, and heat.
Key Ideas
- Energy can change from one form to another. This is called energy transformation.
- A flashlight uses energy stored in a battery. It transfers that energy electrically and gives off light and heat.
- Energy can move between objects. Sunlight transfers energy to a plant, and a warm mug transfers energy to your hands.
- Matter has mass and takes up space. Objects made of matter can store energy or pass it to other things.
- Heat moves from warmer things to cooler things. When a hot drink cools, energy moves into the cup and nearby air.
Vocabulary
- Energy Transformation: A change from one form of energy to another, such as battery energy becoming light.
- Chemical Energy: Energy stored in materials such as food, fuel, and batteries that can be released through chemical changes.
- Conservation of Energy: Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can change form or move from one thing to another.
Discussion Questions
- In a real device, some energy spreads into the surroundings as thermal energy. How could you track that energy rather than saying it disappeared?
- Why does a machine that continually transfers energy to its surroundings need replacement energy to keep operating?
- When you turn off a light, where does the light energy go?
Optional Home Activities:
1. Snap Circuits: Light a Bulb
Build a simple circuit using Snap Circuits that lights an LED. Ask your child: where is the energy starting? Where does it end up? Can you name the transformation? (Chemical in battery → electrical → light + heat)
2. Snap Circuits: Add a Motor or Buzzer
Swap out the bulb for a motor or buzzer. Now the electrical energy is becoming movement or sound instead. Ask: same starting energy, different ending form. Why?
3. The Sunlight Heat Test
Set two objects outside in the sun, one dark colored and one light colored. After 10 minutes, feel both. Which is hotter? Where did that heat come from? This shows light energy from the sun transforming into heat energy, and how the color of a surface affects how much it absorbs.
4. Snap Circuits: Green Energy (advanced)

This Snap Circuits set includes multiple ways to power your creations. It also features a voltage meter for comparing voltage readings from the different sources. Compare how the solar panel, hand crank, and battery pack transfer energy to a device. A voltage reading by itself is not a measurement of total energy. You can also investigate the fan as part of an energy transformation. As you test each method, discuss how energy is transformed from one form into another in each situation.
Phet Energy Forms and Changes Simulation
I highly recommend playing around with this interactive simulator. It allows you to see in real time all the different energy transformations around you.
