Getting Ready G

This video is made for kids, so your child can watch it with you. It's also a good model for how to teach these skills.

Getting Ready G

What this lesson is about

Introducing vowels. Your child learns that vowel sounds buzz and that the air flows out without being blocked. Use familiar words to hear vowel sounds and notice mouth shapes; touching alone does not tell us whether a sound is a vowel.

Try it

Say the vowels in “apple,” “egg,” “itch,” “octopus” and “up.” Let your child listen or copy you, and notice how your mouth changes.

  • Say "ahh," "ooh" and "eee" in a mirror. Notice the different mouth shapes as you say each vowel.
  • Sing a vowel and change your mouth shape slowly.
