Getting Ready I

This video is made for kids, so your child can watch it with you. It's also a good model for how to teach these skills.

Getting Ready I

What this lesson is about

The relaxed schwa sound, the gliding vowel sounds (the ones in "coin" and "cow"), and vowels affected by /r/ (the ones in "car," "her" and "for"). These are just good to hear. No one needs to master them.

Try it

  • Say "about" and "banana" and listen for the quiet "uh."
  • Say "coin" and "cow" slowly and notice your mouth moving.
  • Say "car," "her" and "for" and notice how /r/ changes the vowel.

Letters this lesson

  • V: Slant down to the bottom, then slant up to the top right.
  • W: Four slanted lines: down, up, down, up.
  • X: Slant down from left to right, then cross it with a slant from right to left.
